There are four lights on the front of the modem, labeled Power, Ready, Link and Activity.

Once DSL has been turned up on the line and the modem has been hooked up correctly, the first 3 lights should be green.

A green Power light indicates the modem is functioning.

A green Ready light, solid, indicates ATM network traffic.

A solid green Link light indicates Ethernet connectivity.

A Pulsing Activity light indicates the presence of Ethernet data activity on the PC/LAN.

If The Four Lights On The Modem Are Not All Solid Green

  • Power: The Power light will be green the moment the power chord is plugged in and you have turned the modem on.

  • Ready: If the Ready light is blinking green, confirm that the phone cord is plugged into the DSL 'line' port, and that there are no inline filters on the phone cord. If these are correct, then remove the phone cord from the modem and plug it into a telephone. Confirm that a dial tone is heard and that an intermittent squealing noise is heard. This indicates "sync", or, that the DSL service is enabled on the line. (This noise will NOT be heard on the line if the DSL modem has not yet been installed or if a filter is on this phone cord). If you do not hear this noise, contact Locl-Net Support.

  • Link: If the Link light is unlit, there is no connection detected from your Ethernet. Check the cable connection and make sure that the correct cable is being used.

  • Activity: It is normal for the Activity light to blink once Ethernet connectivity and the DSL connection have been established.

If The Four Lights On The Modem Are Green, But Your Internet Connection Is Not Working:

Test the functioning of your Ethernet card by pinging the following number: 127.0.0.1

Win95/98: Click Start, Programs, MS-DOS Prompt, then do a ping as follows: C: ping 127.0.0.1

Confirm that the IP addresses and DNS information are correctly entered; check the paper included with your Install Package for the correct numbers:

Configuring an IP address:

  • Click Start, Settings, Control Panel
  • Double-click Network
  • In the Configuration tab:
  • Double-click the TCP/IP entry for your Ethernet card
  • Select the IP Address tab, and confirm that the IP address and the Subnet Mask are correct.
  • Select the Gateway tab and confirm that the Gateway address is correct.

Configuring DNS Information:

  • Select the DNS tab, and confirm that Enable DNS is selected. Any name may be entered to identify the computer.
  • Confirm that 63.149.55.3 and 209.211.14.130 are entered in the DNS Server Search Order field.
  • Confirm that LOCL.net is entered in the Domain Suffix Search Order field.

Shut down the DSL modem and the computer and reboot. Wait a few minutes for the modem lights to come back on and then test your connection again.

If the IP addresses and DNS information are correct, try pinging the gateway; follow the instructions as above for pinging, substituting your own gateway IP address (this number is included in your Installation Pack). If you are unable to ping your gateway, this is probably a routing problem; contact LOCL.net.
